Of Time and the River
Mississippian ( 850/900 - 1400/1450 A.D. )
Archaeologists use the term Mississippian because many major centers of this way of life occur in the Mississippi River valley and along its tributaries such as the Ohio River. Mississippians are gardeners: corn, squash, several seedbearing plants (sunflower, marshelder, lamb’s quarters, maygrass, knotweed, little barley), and later beans are the principal crops.
