They enter the Mississippi from the Wisconsin River and paddle southward. By the time they reach what is now Arkansas, they realize that the Mississippi won’t lead them west to the Pacific; what’s worse, they’re headed for Spanish territory. So they reverse course and paddle back north, eventually turning to the northeast and into the Illinois River.
